Bijayananda Co Operative Sugar Mills Ltd

People know us here at 76-C, A.J.C. Bose Road as the place where all the sugar business happens. It’s been Bijayananda Co Operative Sugar Mills Ltd for quite a while now. If you come by our office, you’ll see it’s a bit of a maze with all the files and people coming in and out from the mills. It gets pretty loud with the traffic outside on the main road, but we’re used to it. Most days start with tea and checking the lists of what’s coming in from the fields. We aren’t a fancy corporate setup with glass walls; it’s more about old wooden desks and fans that have been humming for years. The guys here have been working together for a long time. We know each other's families and how everyone takes their coffee. Sugar is a tough business because you’re always at the mercy of the weather and the crops, but that’s just how it goes in a co-operative. We spend a lot of time on the phone with the guys at the mill site. We have to make sure the crushing is on schedule. Sometimes the paperwork piles up on the desks, and it feels like we’ll never get through it, but we always do. It’s just a regular place where we try to keep things moving so the farmers get paid and the sugar gets to where it needs to be. Nothing too complicated about it, just a lot of work and some patience.
