If you walk down Lalbazar Street, you’ll find us on the second floor of number 2. It’s an old building, the kind with thick walls and stairs that have been worn down in the middle by years of people walking up and down. Balaji Exports has been based here for quite a while now. The office isn't very large, and it gets a bit warm in the afternoons, but the overhead fans do their best. We’ve got a few desks pushed together and some old filing cabinets that squeak every time you open them. Outside the window, the street is always loud with horns and people shouting, but after a few hours, it just becomes background noise. We spend our days coordinating shipments and talking to suppliers. It’s a lot of phone calls and checking manifests. We don't have fancy uniforms or a big sign outside, just a small nameplate. The tea stall downstairs is where we get our morning start. Sometimes the rain leaks a little near the window frame when the monsoon hits hard, but we just move the papers and keep going. It’s a simple operation. We aren't trying to be something we're not. We just show up, do the work, and manage the export side of things as best as we can. It’s a lived-in space, and it feels like home to those of us who work here every day.
