We are based at 144/1/1 Cotton Street in Kolkata. This is right in the middle of one of the busiest trading areas you will ever see. The street is always full of people carrying heavy loads and handcarts trying to get through the traffic. We deal in pipes, so our place is always a bit cluttered with different lengths of metal and plastic. It is a gritty, hardworking environment. The building is quite old and has that specific smell of dust and metal that you only find in North Kolkata. We have a small crew of men who have been working with us for decades. They know where every single piece of stock is hidden in the back. We don't have a fancy showroom or air conditioning. We just have a few fans and a lot of heavy-duty shelves. Most of our customers are builders or plumbers who have been buying from us for a long time. They know we don't play games with the prices. We sit at our wooden desks and write out the bills by hand. It is noisy and crowded, but that is the way business has always been done on Cotton Street. We drink a lot of tea and talk to the other shopkeepers while we wait for the trucks to be loaded. It is not a glamorous job, but it is what we know and we do it well.
