Our place, Suri Electricals And Ceramics, is right in the heart of Khurja. If you know anything about this part of Uttar Pradesh, you know it's all about pottery and clay, but we handle the electrical side of things too. It's a bit of a mix, really. Some days we are looking at ceramic insulators and other days it’s just basic wiring stuff that people need for their homes. The shop isn't anything fancy to look at. We keep things simple because that's what works for us and the people who live around here. Khurja has a certain rhythm to it, and we've been part of it for a long time. You’ll find us sitting among boxes most of the time. Sometimes the dust from the ceramic factories nearby gets into everything, so we spend a lot of time just cleaning surfaces. It's not a glamorous job, but it's what we know how to do. We don't really have a big team or a lot of rules. We just show up, open the shutters, and see who comes in. Sometimes it's a neighbor needing a small part, and other times it's a bigger order that takes all afternoon to pack. We drink a lot of tea while we work. If the power goes out, which happens now and then, we just sit outside and wait for it to come back. That's just how life goes in this town.
