Cpm Handlooms is located at 77 Velusamypuram West, over in Vadivel Nagar. This part of the country has a long history with cloth, and we are just a small part of that. If you walk into our place, the first thing you notice is the sound of the looms. It’s a rhythmic clicking that goes on all day. There are threads of every color you can imagine sitting in baskets and on shelves. The air is always filled with a bit of lint, so we keep the windows wide open to let the breeze through. We have a handful of people who have been weaving for most of their lives. Their hands move so fast you can barely see what they are doing. It’s not a modern factory with robots; it’s mostly people sitting and working with their hands. We don't have a glossy catalog or a big marketing budget. We just make the fabric and the handloom items the way they have always been made. Sometimes the colors aren't exactly the same from one batch to the next because that’s just how hand-dying works. We think that’s fine, though. It shows a person actually made it. Our office is just a small desk in the corner of the workroom where we keep our accounts. We don't get many visitors, but when we do, we always offer them a seat and some water. It’s a slow and steady kind of life here that we really enjoy.
