We are over at 51/40, Goldiee House in Nayaganj. This is a crowded part of town and the air is always full of the smell of ground spices. If you have ever been to Nayaganj, you know how the streets are filled with sacks and workers carrying heavy loads on their backs. Our building is a busy spot where we handle the masale. We have been here for a long while and the rhythm of the place is very set. In the mornings, we get everything ready and the noise of the machines starts up. It is a bit loud and you have to speak up to be heard over the grinding and the packing. We have a lot of people working here, mostly just local folks who know the trade well. The office part of Goldiee House is where the paperwork gets done, but the real work is where the spices are being moved. We don't spend much time on fancy things or making the place look polished. The desks are old and the floors are often dusty with pepper and turmeric. It is just the way it is when you work with spices all day. Sometimes we have tea breaks and sit out on the steps to get some fresh air. It is a hard job but it is what we do. People in the neighborhood know us by the sharp scent that hangs around our doors.
