Aiat Junior College is situated out in Mirza, Kamrup. If you are coming from the main part of Guwahati, it takes a little while to get here. We are right in that Assam stretch where things feel a bit more open. The college is for the older kids finishing up their last two years of school. Most of them come in by bus or cycle from the surrounding villages. The classrooms have the usual wooden benches and big blackboards. It gets quite humid here during the monsoon. We often have to deal with the rain leaking in a little bit near the windows. Students hang out in the corridors during their breaks. They talk about their exams and what they want to do later on. We don't have a big cafeteria, just a small spot where people grab tea or a quick snack. The teachers are mostly local folks who have been teaching the same subjects for years. We follow the standard curriculum that everyone else does. There isn't much flair to the building. It’s a plain concrete structure with several rooms. We keep a ledger for the attendance and a bell that someone has to ring manually. Life moves at a certain pace here in Kamrup. We just try to get through the syllabus and make sure the students are ready for their finals. It’s a straightforward place for those living around the Mirza area. We are just here doing the work.
