Out here in Osian, things are a bit different than what you see in the main city of Jodhpur. We are Slmd Jain College, and we’ve been serving this particular part of Rajasthan for a good while now. The desert air and the sand can be pretty harsh on the building, so it feels like we are always painting something or fixing a broken window. It’s a local place through and through. Most of our staff live nearby and they know the families of the students who study here, which makes it feel personal. We don't have a lot of extra money for fancy decorations or landscaping, so we keep things very basic and functional. The classrooms have the desks and boards they need and not much else. We spend our days tracking attendance and making sure the library books actually get returned on time. It is a lot of routine stuff that might not sound very exciting to an outsider, but it’s what keeps a college like ours going. When the wind blows the sand in, we just sweep it out and keep moving with our work. We aren't trying to impress anyone with big, academic words. We just want to make sure the young people in Osian have a decent place to go after they finish school. Sometimes we have to deal with power cuts, but everyone here is used to that. We are just a small team trying to stay organized.
