Down in Sursagar, specifically the Chopad area, is where Rustam Ali Stone And Cutting Art is located. It is a place where you will always hear the sound of saws cutting through heavy rock. The water runs over the blades to keep them cool, so there is always a bit of a mess on the floor. We spend our days surrounded by huge slabs of stone that come in from the quarries. The air smells like wet earth and stone dust most of the time. It is a rough kind of environment, but it’s what we have been doing for years. Chopad is a busy area, so there are always people moving about and asking questions. Our workshop isn't cleaned up for visitors; it’s a working space with tools lying around and half-finished pieces sitting in the corners. We wear heavy boots and clothes that we don't mind getting dirty. Sometimes the sun hits the workshop just right and you can see all the dust floating in the air. We don't have a receptionist or a waiting room. If you come by, you just walk up to whoever isn't busy with a machine. It’s a simple setup, really. We just take the stones, cut them to the size needed, and move on to the next one. It’s physical work that keeps us busy from morning until the sun goes down over Sursagar.
