Kanhiya Sweet & Caters

Down here in Kamla Nehru Nagar, things start moving way before most people are even awake. At Kanhiya Sweet & Caters, we get the big pots going early. You can smell the sugar and the frying from down the street. It’s a small place, really, and sometimes it gets a bit cramped when we have a big catering order to finish. We are usually covered in flour or have sticky hands from making the sweets. It’s just the way it is. We don't have some high-tech kitchen; it’s mostly just us using the same old tools we’ve had for years. The floor gets a bit slippery sometimes, so we have to be careful. Customers walk in off the street in Kamla Nehru Nagar and we just chat while we pack their bags. It’s a local spot. We do a lot of work for weddings and small parties nearby. Sometimes the orders are so big we wonder how we will get it all done, but we always manage. There’s no big secret to it, just staying on your feet and keeping the heat right under the pans. We like being part of the neighborhood here. People know our faces and they know where to find us when they want something for a celebration. It’s hard work, but we are used to the long hours and the heat from the stoves. We just keep making the sweets day after day.
