Being located Below Gumat means we are right in the thick of things. Kashmir Walnut Industries isn't a massive factory with robots; it is mostly just us and a bunch of bags filled with walnuts. The air always smells a bit like dry shells and dust. We spend a lot of time sitting on low stools, checking the nuts to make sure they aren't cracked or bad before they get sent out. It is slow work and your back starts to ache after a few hours. The location isn't the easiest to find if you aren't from around here, but the locals know where we are. We have been doing this for years, and the routine hasn't changed much. A truck pulls up, we unload the heavy sacks, and then the sorting starts. We talk about the weather or what’s happening in the market while we work. The walls are a bit stained from years of use and the floor is concrete. We don't have any flashy signs out front. If you come by, you’ll probably find us covered in a bit of dust, trying to get through the day's pile of work. We don't try to be something we aren't. We just handle the walnuts, pack them up, and get them ready for whoever is buying them that week. It's a simple life, but it works for us and we get to go home knowing the day's work is finished.
