Number 99 in Sher Singh Colony is our main base, tucked away in the Basti Peerdas area of Jalandhar. It is a typical neighborhood setup where everyone knows what everyone else is doing. Our building is always full of different fabrics and the sound of scissors cutting through cloth. We have been in this part of Punjab for a while now, and we have seen the area change, but our work stays pretty much the same. We handle a lot of different wardrobe items, trying to keep up with what the local shops are looking for. The office is really just a desk in the corner of the main room where we keep the ledger. We don't have any fancy air conditioning, so we rely on the ceiling fans and keeping the windows open during the summer. It gets hot, but that is Jalandhar for you. The staff are mostly local folks who have been with us since we started. We don't use big words or have long meetings about strategies. We just look at what needs to be sewn today and we get to it. Sometimes we run out of thread or a machine breaks down, and we have to scramble to get it fixed. It is a practical, no-nonsense kind of place. We just want to finish our work and go home to our families at the end of the day. It’s a lot of cutting and stitching.
