Shastri Nagar is a busy place and there’s always noise from the street coming in through the door. I have two chairs and a small sink for washing hair. It’s mostly just me working most days. I do simple haircuts for kids and men. Jaipur gets really hot in the summer, so I have a big desert cooler that makes a lot of noise but it keeps the shop from being an oven while I work. I don’t use any of those expensive gels or sprays. Just water, a bit of oil, and the regular shaving cream you get at the store. Most of my customers are people who live in the apartments nearby or shop at the local market every day. We talk about the cricket scores or how the prices of things are going up in the city. I keep my scissors sharp and my combs in a jar of blue liquid on the shelf. The floor is old tile and it’s stained in some places, but I keep it swept. It’s a small life but I like being my own boss in this little corner of Jaipur. People know they can come here and get a quick trim without any fuss or high prices. It is a simple life for me.
