About Shri Om Shiva Handicrafts – Art & Craft in Jaipur
We are located in Barkat Nagar on Road No. 14. It’s a busy neighborhood with a lot of small shops. Our space at F-799-A is usually full of stuff we’re working on. You’ll see bits of wood or fabric lying around depending on what the order is. Handicrafts take a lot of patience. It’s not like a factory where everything comes out the same. Sometimes a piece doesn't look right, so we have to start over. My hands are usually a bit dirty from the materials. It’s a small team here. We know each other's families and what’s going on in the neighborhood. The front door stays open most of the day to let some air in. It gets quite cramped when we have a big shipment ready to go. We don't spend much on decorating the shop. The items themselves are the decoration. Customers come by and ask for specific things. Sometimes we can do it, sometimes we can't. Barkat Nagar has a good feel to it. People look out for each other. We’ve been in this exact spot for years. The floor is concrete and the walls are a bit stained, but it’s where we work. We don't have a website that works well, so mostly people just find us by walking in or hearing about us from a friend. It’s basic, honest work. We spend our evenings packing things into crates. There’s always sawdust on my shoes by the time I go home. It’s a quiet way to make a living.
