Shiva Handicrafts is tucked away at number 20, Manu Path, on Road No. 5 in Ashokpura, Sodala. Our workshop is right in the middle of a very busy residential and commercial area. We work with our hands mostly, dealing with traditional crafts that have been made in this region for generations. It’s not a sterile environment; there is wood shavings or bits of stone and paint everywhere. That’s just part of the process. We work with a few local artisans who come in and out throughout the week. Sometimes we sit on the floor to work because it’s just easier that way for certain tasks. We don’t have a big corporate structure or fancy titles. Everyone just does what needs to be done, whether it’s carving, painting, or packing things into old newspapers and crates. The street outside is always noisy with scooters and people selling things, which we’ve grown used to over the years. We take pride in the fact that what we make is real and not just something popped out of a machine. It takes time to get things right, and sometimes we make mistakes and have to start over. That’s just how it goes with handicrafts. We aren’t looking to conquer the world; we just want to keep these traditions going and provide for our families by making things people might like to have in their homes for a long time.
