S S Handicrafts is located at 38 Hawa Mahal Road, right in the heart of all the noise and color. Being so close to the Hawa Mahal means there is a never-ending stream of people walking past our door. The shop is filled with the scent of carved wood and the fine dust that comes from sanding down handmade items. We have shelves packed with all sorts of things, from small figures to larger pieces that take up a lot of floor space. The light comes in through the front door and hits the brass and wood, making the whole place feel a bit crowded but warm. We spend our time unpacking new arrivals, dusting off the items on the shelves, and talking to whoever wanders in. It is a noisy street with rickshaws and tourists everywhere, so we are used to the sound of bells and shouting. Sometimes we sit in the back and work on packing items in newspaper and bubble wrap for people to take home. The floor is old stone and stays cool even when it is burning hot outside. We don’t have a big marketing plan, we just put our things out where people can see them and wait to see who stops by. It is a lot of manual work, moving boxes and rearranging the display, but we like being right in the middle of the old city bustle.
