Being at 108 Johari Bazar means we are right in the thick of things. This market is old and very crowded, and S K Jain & Sons has been part of it for a long time. My grandfather was the one who first opened the doors here. We have kept things mostly the same over the years. We deal with jewelry and stones, but it’s more about the relationships we have with families who have been coming to us for generations. It’s not like those big malls where everything is shiny and cold. Here, you sit down on the floor cushions and we talk for a bit before even looking at anything. The shop is small and the walls are lined with old wooden cabinets. Sometimes the power goes out and we have to use flashlights, but nobody seems to mind much. Johari Bazar is a place where you have to dodge cows and rickshaws just to get to the front door. We don't spend money on big ads or billboards. We just rely on the fact that people know our name. It’s a family business through and through. My sons are learning the trade now, though they spend more time on their phones than I’d like. We close up when the market gets quiet in the evening. It’s a lot of tradition packed into a small space that still smells like old wood and incense.
