Riya Hair Cut Salon

I’ve got this small place, Shop No. 22, over in the Sanganer area of Jaipur. It’s called Riya Hair Cut Salon. I named it after my daughter because I wanted something that felt personal. The shop is tucked away a bit, but the locals know where it is. Sanganer is a busy place with all the printing and markets, so there’s always a lot of movement outside the door. Inside, it’s much quieter. I have a few posters on the walls of different styles, though most people just ask for the same thing they always get. I spend most of my day standing on the tile floor. It gets tiring on the legs, but I’m used to it now. I have a small bench outside for when the shop gets full. Often, neighbors just stop by to sit and talk for a while even if they don't need their hair done. I use an old spray bottle and some sharp combs I’ve had for years. The sink is a bit temperamental, so I have to jiggle the handle sometimes. It’s not a perfect place, but it’s mine. I like being my own boss and seeing the same faces every month. We aren't trying to be like those big malls in the city. We just provide a place for a haircut and a bit of conversation. That is enough for me and my family to get by in Jaipur.
