Ram Lal Hair Dresser

Ram Lal Hair Dresser is situated out in Bidara, Shahpura, right along the NH-8 highway. Being near the highway means there is always a lot of dust and the sound of trucks passing by. The shop is a simple place where locals from the village and sometimes people traveling through stop in. It is not a place for anything decorative. We have a couple of chairs and the basic tools for cutting hair and shaving beards. The walls have a few old posters on them and the paint is peeling a little in the corners. We start early in the morning before the sun gets too high. It gets really dusty because of the road, so we are always dusting off the counters. Water comes from a tank and we use it sparingly. Most of the men around here just want a simple cut so they can get back to their farms or their jobs. We don't have air conditioning, just a ceiling fan that hums quite a bit. Conversations are usually about the crops or the traffic on the road to Jaipur. It is a quiet life except for the highway noise. We’ve been here in Shahpura for a good while and everyone knows the spot. The towels are clean but they aren't new. It is just a regular spot for a regular haircut. Sometimes the kids come in for a trim after school and they make a lot of noise.
