Priya Handicrafts is located at 272, Shanti Nagar. Our building is right opposite the Durgapura Railway Station, so we hear the trains coming and going all day long. It is a nice rhythm once you get used to it. The area is called Shanti Nagar, and it is relatively calm compared to the main market areas of the city. We do most of our work in a large room that serves as both a workshop and a storage area. There are shelves everywhere filled with finished handicrafts and raw materials waiting to be used. We don't have a big storefront with glass windows. People usually find us by word of mouth or by seeing our small sign across from the station. The floor is often covered in small scraps of fabric or wood depending on what we are making that week. We have a small team of people from the local neighborhood who come in daily. We drink a lot of tea and talk while we work. It is a very hands-on environment. Sometimes the dust from the road gets in, but we just sweep it out and keep going. It is a simple life here, making things one at a time. We don't worry about being modern or high-tech. We just use the tools we have and try to make things that look decent. We mostly just keep to ourselves and focus on the craft at hand. It is enough to keep us busy.
