Mahalaxmi Medical & Provision Store

This shop is right in the middle of the Sanganer Baza area, not too far from the Jaipur G P O. It’s a bit of a mix here because we have medicines on one side and everyday household items on the other. It makes for a busy day because you never know what someone is going to walk in and ask for. One person might need something for a fever and the next person wants a bag of flour or some washing powder. The shelves are packed tight with little cardboard boxes of pills and glass bottles. On the other side, we’ve got big jars of snacks and packets of tea. The space is quite narrow, so when three or four people come in at once, it gets a bit crowded and everyone has to shuffle around. Sanganer is always noisy with the sound of horns and people shouting, and all that noise comes right through the front door. We have a small glass counter where we count out change and write things down in a notebook. It’s been this way for a long time. We don’t have fancy displays or anything like that. We just know where everything is kept, even the small items that get tucked away in the back corners. It’s a lot of standing and reaching for things on high shelves, but that’s just how the work goes. People come in, get what they need, and head back out into the market.
