Handicraft Udyog is located over at 481 Civil Lines on Hawa Mahal Road. It’s a really busy part of town, especially being so close to Shimla Hotel where things never seem to stop. Traffic can be a real headache around here in the evenings when everyone is heading home, but it's where we’ve always been. The building we are in is quite old, which gives it some character but also means things break a lot. There is always a lot of dust coming in from the main road, so we are constantly wiping down the desks and the shelves. Most days we are just busy checking our stock and making sure everything is where it should be in the back room. It is not like those big fancy showrooms you see in the lifestyle magazines. We have piles of things here and there and sometimes I forget where I put my own pen because there’s so much stuff moving around. The staff has been together for a long time now. We drink a lot of chai together and talk about the cricket or the weather while we get through the work. Being on Hawa Mahal Road means we see a lot of tourists passing by outside, but mostly we just focus on our own tasks inside. It gets quite hot in the peak of summer because the windows are large, but we just turn the fans up. We don't have a big reception area. Just a plain door and a lot of work.
