Chandni Hair Cut

Down on Sheopur Road in Sanganer, you’ll find Chandni Hair Cut. Sanganer is a very crowded part of Jaipur, and this road is no exception. There are always motorcycles and rickshaws going past. The shop is situated right in the middle of all that activity. We have a couple of old-style barber chairs that are actually quite comfortable once you sit in them. The mirrors are big and they reflect the street outside. I spend most of my day here, from eight in the morning until late in the evening. Pratap Nagar is just nearby, so we get people from there too. The shop isn't fancy at all. We have a small sink for washing hair and a shelf with some talcum powder and aftershave. The smell of the aftershave is something you get used to. We don't have a lot of space, so if there are more than three people waiting, they usually stand outside on the pavement. I’ve been doing this for years and my hands just know what to do now. We have a small plastic clock on the wall that ticks quite loudly when the shop is quiet. But it’s rarely quiet. Sanganer is always moving. We just provide a place for a man to sit down for a bit and get his hair sorted out. It’s a simple business. My brother helps out in the evenings. The water we use is kept in a bucket near the sink because the tap is a bit slow.
