Chaman Handicrafts

The shop here on Ajmer Road is always full of something interesting. Chaman Handicrafts is located at number 77, right near Park Street in Govind Nagar East. It’s a bit of a maze inside because we have so many different pieces crammed onto the shelves. We’ve got everything from small carvings to bigger items that take two people to lift. I usually spend my mornings dusting things off and rearranging the window display so people walking by can see what’s new. The traffic on Ajmer Road is constant, so there’s always a bit of background noise from the cars and rickshaws. We don’t have a fancy computer system; most things are written down in a big ledger we keep behind the counter. Sometimes people come in just to look around and chat for a bit, which is fine by us. It gets a bit hectic when a big shipment arrives and we have to find space for it all without breaking anything. The floor is old stone and it’s seen a lot of foot traffic over the years. We try to keep things organized, but in a place like this, a little bit of clutter is unavoidable. Most of the stuff we have comes from local makers, and you can see the marks of the tools on the wood or metal. It’s not factory-made, so nothing is ever perfectly straight or identical, which I think is better anyway. We just open up in the morning and see who comes through the door.
