Our place is out in the VKI Area on Road Number 1D which is a huge industrial zone in Jaipur. Ceramic Tableware India Pvt.Ltd. occupies building A 132 and it’s a big dusty space as you might expect. The kilns are running most of the time so it stays quite warm inside even during the winter months. There’s a constant clinking sound of plates and bowls being moved around or stacked on wooden pallets. We have a small office section but most of the action happens on the floor where the workers are. It’s not the kind of place where you’d want to wear a nice suit because you’ll probably end up with clay on your sleeves. We’ve been here for years and the building has seen better days but it holds up well enough. Most of the staff have been with us for a long time and we all know the routine by heart. The water cooler is usually the place where people gather to gossip for a minute before heading back to the production line. We deal with a lot of breakage which is just part of the job when you’re working with ceramics. It’s a hard grind sometimes especially when a big order is due and we are running behind. We just keep the wheels turning and try to make sure everything is packed securely before the trucks arrive.
