If you have ever been to the M.T. Cloth Market, you know it is not a place for the faint of heart. We are at shop number 83, right in the middle of all that madness. Surendra Textile has been a part of this market for a long time. The space is narrow and deep, with rolls of cloth stacked from the floor right up to the rafters. You have to be careful walking through so you don't knock anything over. There is always someone coming in to ask about a price or to see a specific pattern. The air is thick with the smell of cotton and the sound of bells from the temples nearby mixed with the shouts of the loaders. We sit on small stools or sometimes right on the floor when we are sorting through the stock. It is a very traditional way of working, but it’s what we know best. We don't use much technology here, mostly just big ledgers and pens to keep track of what comes in and what goes out. The midday sun can make the shop feel like an oven, so we all look forward to the breeze that kicks up in the evening. It’s a hard way to make a living, but there is a lot of history in these walls and in this market. We are just one small part of the big picture at 83 M.T.
