Idukki Mahila Cardamom Producer Company Limited is based at Vettoonickal House, building number 1503 in Ward 12. This is a company made up of women from the Idukki area. We all know how much work goes into cardamom, from the planting to the harvest and the drying. It’s a tough crop, but it’s what we know best. We decided to come together as a producer company so we could have a bit more say in how our products are sold. Usually, we are just working out of the house, sitting together and going over the accounts or planning the next collection. It isn't a corporate office with cubicles; it’s a living space where we also happen to run a business. There’s usually some tea brewing and a lot of talking. We have our fair share of arguments about the best way to do things, but we always figure it out together. Being in Idukki, the weather is always a factor, and we spend a lot of time worrying about the rains or the humidity in the storage area. We aren't trying to change the world, just trying to make sure the women farmers here get a fair deal for the hard work they put in every day. Most of us have been doing this since we were young, and having our own company feels like a solid step forward for our families in the village. It's about looking after our own.
