Soni Engineering operates out of Plot No. 2-3-344 in the C-Class section of Nallagutta. It is a neighborhood where everyone knows everyone else’s business. We have been here long enough that we feel like part of the scenery. Our work is mainly mechanical engineering, focusing on whatever parts come through the door. It is a grit-under-the-fingernails kind of place. The building itself is an older one, but it holds everything we need to get through the day. We have some lathes and drills that have been with us for a long time. They are not the newest models, but they work just fine for what we do. Sometimes the power goes out in the afternoon, so we just sit outside and wait for it to come back on. That is just life in Nallagutta. We do not have a philosophy or a grand plan. We just open up in the morning, check what needs fixing, and get to it. Some days are slow and we just clean the tools, and other days we are working past dark to finish a client’s order. We handle a lot of small-scale fabrication too. It is just me and a couple of others keeping the place running. We do not use fancy computer systems for everything; a lot of our notes are still scribbled on pads of paper. It is a practical way to live and work, and it keeps us busy enough.
