Nivasa Rice Mill

I have been here at 67/34 H M T Road for quite a while now. Nivasa Rice Mill isn't some fancy place with glass doors or air conditioning. It is just a work site where we process grain. Every morning, the shutters go up and the machines start making that heavy rattling sound. People in Chinthal know us by the noise and the white dust that sometimes settles on the road outside. We spend most of the day moving heavy bags from the back to the front. Sometimes the trucks arrive late because of the traffic on H M T Road, and everything gets backed up. My hands are usually dry from handling the sacks, and there is always a layer of rice husks on the floor that needs sweeping. It is hard work, mostly physical, and the heat gets pretty bad under the tin roof in the afternoons. We don't have a big office or anything. Just a small desk where the accounts are kept in those red registers. We see the same faces every week, people coming in for their monthly supply. Sometimes we talk about the weather or the price of things these days. It is just a normal mill doing what mills do. We don't try to be anything else. The walls could use a new coat of paint, and the light bulbs flicker sometimes, but the work gets done and the rice goes out to the families nearby.
