Baba Saudan Singh Veermati Devi Public School is tucked away in Panchavati Colony, over in the Manikonda area of Hyderabad. It’s a bit of a long name for a school, but everyone around here knows it simply as the local school. Manikonda has become a very busy place lately with all the new apartments and shops being built. Our school is right there in the middle of the local life. We have students coming in from all parts of the colony and even from further out. The school building isn’t trying to be anything other than what it is—a place for children to sit and learn. You won’t find any polished corporate talk here. We just deal with the daily reality of teaching kids and managing the classrooms. Mornings are usually a rush of parents dropping off their little ones and teachers getting their chalk and books ready. During the day, you can hear the murmur of classes from the street if you’re walking by. It’s an honest kind of place. We don’t have a big mission statement on the wall; we just make sure the syllabus is covered and the kids are safe while they are here. Sometimes the power goes out or the street gets muddy when it rains, but we just keep going anyway. It is a neighborhood school through and through, where the staff knows the names of the kids and their families. We just take it one day at a time.
