We’re up on the 5th floor of Singareni Bhawan in Red Hills, Hyderabad, and the climb is something else if the lift is busy. The address is 11 4 660, and it’s a bit of a landmark in this part of the city. APERC is what we go by, and we’re mostly focused on the regulatory side of things, which means a lot of checking and double-checking. It’s a government-feeling building, so you can expect lots of long hallways that all look the same and plenty of fans. The 500004 area is right in the heart of things, so getting here in the morning can be a bit of a challenge with the Hyderabad traffic being what it is. Once you’re finally inside, it’s a bit quieter than the street. We have rows of desks covered in files and stacks of papers that never seem to go away. It’s not the kind of place with a lounge or a fancy snack bar for guests. We just have a small pantry where we make tea or coffee when we need a break. The views from the 5th floor are actually okay, you can see all the rooftops and trees of Red Hills. Our work is pretty serious, dealing with rules and numbers, so the atmosphere is usually quite focused and a bit dry. We aren't here to sell anything; we just make sure the guidelines are followed. It’s steady, repetitive work, but it’s important.
