Rana Varieties is located right on Station Road in Amta, Howrah. This location means we are always around people who are in a hurry to catch a train or are just getting back from the city. We keep a lot of quick items like cold drinks, biscuits, and cigarettes. The shop is small and can get very hot during the summer because of the way the sun hits the front of the building. We have a tin roof that makes a lot of noise when it rains, which can make it hard to hear what customers are saying. I’ve been running this place mostly by myself for several years. My brother used to help, but he moved on to other work. Station Road is never really silent; there is always the sound of trains or people shouting for rickshaws. We stay open quite late because that’s when the last few commuters come through the station. It’s a long day and my legs get tired from standing, but it’s a good way to earn a living. We don’t have any fancy lighting or modern shelves. We just stack the goods where there is space. Most people just want to get their items quickly and move on, so we try to keep the popular stuff right within reach. It’s just a normal part of life here near the station.
