Down here on Gopal Girish Ghosh Lane, life moves at its own pace. It is a narrow street in Salkia, and sometimes getting the rice bags in and out is a bit of a squeeze. We have been at this address, 16/1, for quite some time. The building has seen better days, but it does what we need it to do. We deal with rice mostly, obviously. The smell of raw grain is everywhere once you step inside. It is a family-run kind of thing, though we have a few extra hands to help with the heavy lifting. People in the neighborhood know us by name. We don’t really have a big fancy showroom. It’s mostly just stacks of sacks and a desk that’s seen a lot of paperwork over the years. We spend most of the morning checking the quality and talking to the suppliers. Salkia is a crowded place, so there is always noise from the street outside. Sometimes the rain makes things difficult because we have to keep everything dry. We just focus on what is in front of us. It is not a glamorous business, but it is steady. We appreciate the regulars who come by. We don’t put on airs here. If you come in, you might have to wait a minute while we finish loading something. That’s just the way we work. It works for us.
