Great Eastern Hotel

If you head down Khatir Bazer Lane in Mahesh, you’ll find us at 103A. We are right here in Rishra, which is a busy little part of the Hooghly district. The Great Eastern Hotel has been a part of this street for quite some time. It’s a bit of a walk from the main transport links, but that makes it a bit quieter than the shops out on the main road. Most days we are just busy with the usual things—changing sheets, checking in people who come for work in the local factories, and making sure the kitchen has enough supplies. We aren't some high-rise building with elevators and carpets everywhere. It’s a practical place with solid walls and a roof that’s seen plenty of monsoons. Sometimes we have to remind the guests to turn off the fans when they leave, and sometimes the wifi is a bit moody, but we manage. Being in West Bengal, we get all sorts of weather, and the building definitely shows its age here and there. We don't mind because it gives the place a bit of character that newer places don't have. Most of the staff comes from nearby villages around Hooghly. We know where the good local markets are and which days they get too crowded. It’s a plain business, really.
