Sindhi Sweets

The shop is over in Chaw Mandi, right on New Railway Road in Roorkee. It has been around for a long time, which is why we have both an old and a new shop number on the paperwork. Most people just look for the Gausala nearby to find us. It’s a busy street with plenty of bikes and people walking past all day long. Inside, we have these glass counters where we keep all the sweets arranged in rows. We spend a lot of time every morning making fresh batches of everything. It’s sticky work, especially when the weather is hot, but we’re used to it by now. The floor gets swept a few times a day because people bring in dust from the road. We don't really do much advertising or anything like that. People just know where we are. We have a few staff members who have been with us for years, so they know exactly how much sugar goes into every pot. It’s a straightforward business. We show up, we make the food, and we sell it until the trays are empty. Sometimes it gets quite crowded in the evenings when people are heading home from work and want to pick something up for their families. We just keep our heads down and keep working until it’s time to pull the shutters down for the night. That’s just the way life goes here in Roorkee.
