The shop, Deva Ram Harish Kumar, is located at 851/16 in Nai Basti Bara Bazar on Basai Road. It’s a traditional kind of place. We have been in this market for a very long time, and you can tell by the way the wooden shelves look. They are a bit worn down at the edges. We deal with a lot of different goods, and the inventory changes depending on what is coming in from the suppliers. The air in Bara Bazar is always thick with the smell of the market and the dust from the road. We use big ledger books to keep track of things, though we have a computer now too. It’s usually me and a couple of others handling the customers. Some of them have been buying from us for years, so we know their families and their stories. Basai Road is always blocked with traffic, so there is a constant background noise of horns. We have a small back room where we keep the extra stock and where we go to make tea in the afternoon. It’s not a modern showroom with air conditioning that works all the time. It is a practical place where we do business the old way. We open early in the morning and don't leave until the last customer is gone. It is a long day, but it’s what we have always done for many years now. We know the neighbors and the other sellers very well.
