Universal Engineers

Our workshop is tucked away in Gali No. 3 of the Rajender Nagar Industrial Area, over in Mohan Nagar. It’s a narrow street, and getting a truck in here can be a real challenge sometimes. We’ve been at 36/6 for a long time. It’s a typical small engineering shop. We have a few lathes, a milling machine, and piles of scrap metal in the corner. The floor is usually covered in metal shavings and oil. We do various jobs for bigger factories nearby. Some days it’s just small repairs, other days we’re working on a larger batch of parts. It gets loud when everything is running at once. We don't have a receptionist; if the phone rings, one of us just wipes our hands and picks it up. We’ve had the same group of guys working here for years. We know the rhythms of the neighborhood, when the power might flicker and when the tea guy comes around. We don’t use any fancy management software or anything. Everything is written down in a big ledger on the desk. It’s not a corporate office, it’s just a place where we work hard. Sometimes things go wrong, a tool breaks or an order is late, but we just fix it and move on. That’s how we’ve always done it. We focus on the task at hand and try to stay organized.
