Sawhney Engineering Co. is tucked away at Plot No. 4 inside the Punjab Oil Expeller Compound on Meerut Road. Being in an oil expeller compound means there’s always a specific kind of smell and sound in the air. It’s an old industrial spot, and we fit right in with the rest of the workshops. Our day usually starts with the heavy gates opening and the sound of the first machines warming up. The Meerut Road traffic is always a bit of a nightmare, so we try to get in early to avoid the worst of it. Inside, it’s all about the engineering work. We have benches that have seen decades of use and tools that are well-worn but still do the job. We don’t have a receptionist or a lobby. If someone wants to talk to us, they usually have to walk past the lathes and find one of us in the back. It’s dusty, and there’s always a bit of oil on the floor, no matter how much we sweep. We’ve been doing this for a long time, and we don’t really know any other way to work. It’s about getting the repairs done or finishing the parts for the next customer. We don't put on any acts here. It’s just us, the machines, and the daily grind of an engineering shop on a busy road. It’s a bit rough around the edges, but it’s our place and we know it well.
