Batik India

Batik India is situated at D-3 in Udyog Kunj, right off N.H.-24. Being so close to the highway means we get a lot of noise from the cars speeding by, but it makes it easy for the delivery trucks to find us. Our workshop is where we spend the bulk of our time. It often smells like wax and dye, which is just part of the process of making batik. We have long tables where the fabric is laid out, and we work through the patterns step by step. It is a slow process and you can’t really rush it if you want it to look decent. The floor is usually stained with different colors, and there are racks of fabric drying in whatever space we can find. We don't have a fancy showroom; it's mostly just a working space where things get made. Sometimes when it’s humid, the dye takes forever to dry, and that can slow everything down, but we just adjust our schedule. We are a small group of people who have been doing this for a long time. We don't use a lot of high-tech machines, mostly just our hands and the tools we’ve had for years. It is a quiet kind of work compared to the busy highway outside. We just show up every day, melt the wax, and keep the tradition going in our own simple way.
