You can find us at Shop No.155 in the New Dhan Mandi. Ram Chander Dinesh Kumar is a family-run kind of thing, mostly. We’re right in the thick of the market. It’s always loud and crowded here, with people moving sacks of grain and trucks coming in and out. Our shop is pretty basic. We have a counter, some scales, and some places for people to sit if they’re staying a while to talk business. The walls could probably use a fresh coat of paint, but we never seem to get around to it. We’re too busy dealing with the daily trade. Most of our day is spent talking to farmers and buyers. It’s a lot of haggling and checking the condition of what’s coming in. We drink a lot of chai throughout the day to keep our energy up. The market can be a bit overwhelming if you’re not used to it, but we’ve been here so long it feels like home. We don’t have a website or anything like that. People just know where we are. We keep our books by hand mostly, though we have a small computer for the official stuff now. That’s just how it’s always been for us. The floor is usually covered in some grain dust, but that’s just part of being in the mandi. We have a small radio that plays in the background, mostly for news or music during slow hours. It’s just our life.
