Fort Kochi has a specific smell to it, a mix of the sea air and old wood. My office is over in Southamaravathy, at address X/1023. It’s an old area, tucked away from the main tourist spots where the giant nets are, but you still feel that history every day. The building itself has seen better days, I suppose. The walls are thick and stay relatively cool even when the sun is beating down on the Ernakulam coast. I’ve spent many years here, watching the world go by from the Veli side of town. It’s not a corporate environment. There are no glass walls or shiny elevators. You walk in, and it feels like a place where real work happens without any pretense. Sometimes the street noise gets loud—scooters buzzing by or people shouting to their neighbors—but I’ve gotten used to it. My desk is usually covered in folders and a couple of half-empty tea cups. I don't bother with over-organizing things if they’re just going to get messy again by tomorrow afternoon. It’s a practical space for a practical life. People from the neighborhood know me, and I know them. It’s 682001, a zip code with a lot of weight to it, but here in Southamaravathy, it just feels like home. I don't plan on moving anywhere else anytime soon. It’s got a rhythm that suits me perfectly.
