The Professional Couriers

You have to come down to the basement here in Karol Bagh, specifically Galli No 6/61 in the WEA area. We are right by Mc Donald Chowk, so it is easy to find if you know where the burgers are. It is a bit dark down here compared to the bright lights of Ajmal Khan Road, but we have plenty of lights on. The room is filled with stacks of boxes and envelopes that need to go all over the place. Sometimes the tape dispenser makes that loud screeching sound all afternoon and it gets stuck in your head. We spend a lot of time weighing things on the scale and writing down addresses on the slips. It is a busy spot. People are always rushing in at the last minute before we close up for the night, wanting to get their parcel on the truck. We have a small fan that wobbles a bit, but it keeps the air moving. My back usually hurts by the end of the shift from lifting the heavier bags, but that is part of the job. We don’t have fancy rugs or anything, just concrete floors and a lot of shelves. If you walk past the shops on the main road and head into the alley, you’ll see our door. We drink a lot of chai from the guy around the corner while we wait for the van to arrive. It is a routine that doesn't change much from Monday to Saturday and we just keep the packages moving until everything is cleared out.
