If you ever find yourself wandering through the narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk, you might stumble upon us at 1734 Dariba Kalan. That’s where Mahtab Singh Jain & Sons has been for years. It’s a crowded, noisy part of the city, but there’s a lot of history in these old walls. Our shop is small and can get quite cramped when we have more than two or three people visiting at once. We don't have those big glass display cases you see in the malls. Instead, we have the same old wooden counters and floor seating that have been here since the beginning. It’s a family affair, and most days you’ll find a couple of us sitting here, drinking tea and waiting for the next person to walk through the door. We don't do much in the way of advertising. Most people hear about us from their parents or grandparents. We just focus on the work at hand, whether it's looking at new pieces or helping someone find exactly what they’re looking for. The power goes out sometimes, and it gets sweating hot in the summer, but we don't mind much. It’s just part of being in Dariba Kalan. We take things as they come and try to treat everyone who walks in like a neighbor. It’s a slow way of doing things, but it works for us.
