Our place is Shop Number 61, up on the first floor of the Taj Building on G.B. Road. It’s a busy stretch of road, and you have to keep your eyes open when you’re walking because there’s always something moving. We’ve been trading here for quite some time as Kanti Traders. The shop isn’t very big, and because we’re on the first floor, we have to carry everything up the stairs. It’s a bit of a workout every time a new load comes in. We mostly deal with various hardware and mechanical items. The Taj Building is old, and you can hear the sounds of the street even when the windows are shut. We have a small desk near the front where we keep the bills and a few chairs for when customers want to sit and talk. It’s not like a shop in a mall. It’s practical and a bit messy. We’ve got boxes stacked in the corners and samples hanging on the walls. My father started this, and we’ve just kept it going the same way. We know the other shopkeepers around here, and we often help each other out if someone is short on change or needs a hand with a heavy box. The lights inside are a little dim, but we know exactly where everything is. We stay open late most days, especially when there’s a lot of bustle on G.B. Road. It’s just how we live and work in this part of Delhi.
