If you go down Gali Lohe Wali in Chawri Bazar, you will find us at number 3641. It is a very old part of the city, and the streets are so narrow that two people can barely walk side by side without brushing shoulders. Our office is tucked away, and it feels like stepping back in time once you get inside. There are stacks of legal folders and documents reaching almost to the ceiling. We don't use much technology here, mostly just our pens and old ledgers that have been around longer than I have. The sound of metal being moved in the bazaar outside is constant, but you get used to the clanging after a few days. We spend our mornings reading through papers and talking to people who have problems with their property or their businesses. There isn't any air conditioning, just a ceiling fan that hums loudly while it spins. We sit on wooden chairs that creak every time someone moves. It's a busy place, but not in a modern way. It's more about the steady work and the long conversations we have with clients over small glasses of tea. Sometimes a cat wanders in from the alley and sits on the windowsill for a while. We don't mind. We just keep working through the files, one by one, until it's time to lock the heavy metal gate and head home through the crowded lanes. It is a long day every day but we like the history of this place.
