You cannot even get a small car down here most of the time. We work with all kinds of herbs and spices. The air inside our building always smells strongly of turmeric or cardamom. It is a heavy scent that stays on your skin even after you go home for the day. The building itself is very old, with thick stone walls that keep the rooms cool during the hot summer. We do not have a big storefront for people to browse. It is more of a storage warehouse with a small wooden counter in the front. We get our spices from different parts of the state and some from outside as well. We spend a lot of our time cleaning and sorting the seeds by hand. It is tedious work, but you cannot always trust machines to do it right. My family has lived in this area for a very long time. We know almost everyone on the street. It is a tight community. When we get a new shipment of herbs, the whole mohalla knows about it because of the smell. We do not do much advertising. People just know the quality of our black pepper or ginger.
