Out here in the Udalguri district, life revolves around the seasons and the rain. Kalaigaon Agro Farmer Producer Company Limited is located at Bikash Kumar Saha’s place in Sigrimaripo. It’s a quiet spot most of the time, except when it’s harvest season. Then it gets pretty loud and crowded around here with everyone bringing their stuff. Bikash is the one who keeps everything organized, or at least he tries his best to keep up. We’ve got a lot of different farmers involved, all with different ideas about how things should go. We don't have any fancy mission statements or things like that. We just want to sell our crops for a price that lets us buy supplies for the next round of planting. The office is just a desk with a lot of papers on it. We spend more time in the mud than in the office anyway. Sometimes the electricity goes out and we have to finish our work by candlelight or with a torch. It’s not perfect, but it’s how we live. We grow things like rice and vegetables, whatever the local soil likes. We’ve learned a lot by failing over the years, and we just keep trying new things. It’s about the community here. We help each other when a tractor breaks down or when someone gets sick. It’s more than just a business to us, it’s our whole life in Kalaigaon.
