Karnataka Oil & Flour Mill

Down on Bank Road in Uppinangady, you’ll find us at the Karnataka Oil & Flour Mill. It’s right there in the Puttur Taluq area of Dhakshina Kannada. The first thing you notice when you get close is the sound of the machines running. It’s a loud, steady hum that stays with you all day. We spend most of our hours pouring grain into the hoppers or watching the oil press. There’s always a fine dusting of flour on everything, no matter how much we sweep. Customers come from all over the district, often bringing their own bags to fill up. The building itself is an older one, built with heavy walls to handle the vibration of the equipment. Being on Bank Road means we see a lot of people going back and forth to their errands. Sometimes the weather gets really humid, and that makes the work a bit slower, but the machines keep on going. I’ve been working here for a long time, and I know exactly which part of the floor creaks when you walk over it. We don't have any fancy office space, just a small stool and a ledge where we keep the ledger. It’s hard work, and your hands are always dusty or a bit greasy from the seeds, but it’s what we do.
