Working out of Bungalow No. B-30 in the Banaikala area of Joda is a unique experience. We are located in the Fap Colony, which sits right in the middle of the mining belt in Orissa. You can often feel the red dust in the air and hear the distant sound of machinery. It is a sturdy old bungalow with high ceilings and big windows, which really helps when the Orissa sun is beating down on us in the summer. This serves as the local base for Tata Steel Ltd. here in Joda. It is definitely not a sleek office with glass partitions. Instead, we have thick walls and heavy doors that help keep the heat and the dust outside where they belong. The garden out front is a bit overgrown because we do not have much time for gardening, but it is still a nice spot for a quick breath of air. We handle a lot of the local logistics and site coordination from this bungalow. It is a small group of us and we know almost everyone in the colony by their first name. Life in Joda revolves entirely around the work at the mines, and we are just one piece of that big operation. We do not use much corporate talk here. We mostly discuss the weather, the road conditions, and the work that needs to get done before the monsoon season starts.
