D D Bricks

Down in Kattukudalur, near Chidambaram, is where you will find D D Bricks. It is just a regular brickyard located in a quiet part of the countryside. We have been working this piece of land for quite a while now. The actual process of making the bricks has not changed much for us over the years. We wake up very early to get ahead of the midday heat. Chidambaram can get really hot and humid, so we try to get the heaviest lifting done before the sun gets too high. Our yard is usually full of tall stacks of finished bricks waiting for someone to haul them away. We do not have any big marketing plans or glossy brochures to show people. If someone needs bricks for a new house in the village or the next town over, they just drive down and we talk about it. Sometimes we sit under the shade of a large tree to settle our accounts and have some water. It is a very simple way of living and working. The ground is always stained red from the clay we use. We have a few workers who have been with us for a long time, and we all just know what needs to be done each day. It is a lot of manual work, just stacking and unstacking. It is honest labor and it keeps us going.
